Canal Weekend 2016
A total of thirty six Scouts, Explorers and leaders filled three narrowboats for this weekend. On Friday evening we met up at Shurdington Social Centre, boarded our minibuses and traveled to the Grand Union Canal at Harefield. We were fitted with life-jackets and then boarded our boats: Theo, Hillingdon Star and Merlin. First came a safety talk on how to stay safe on th boats; ‘one hand for the boat‘, ‘wear your life-jacket’, ‘keep within the profile of the boat‘. Then it was supper and bed. Early Saturday morning we set off heading north. At the first lock we were given instructions on the safe working of locks: ‘don’t run‘. ‘tale the windlass off the paddle gear’, ‘wait to open the gates‘. We stopped at Tesco supermarket’s mooring and all joined in the buying of the food we had chosen for the rest of the trip. The weather was cold but dry and the forecast rain and winds never arrived. We moored for the night at Apsley, just south of Hemel Hempsted having winded (turned round) and taken on water. During the evening we cooked and enjoyed a good meal, did a quiz and played games. Sunday saw us retracing our route back to Harefield. The Scouts all earnt their Power Coxswain badge and the Explorers the Water Activities badge. After we had cleared and tidied the boats it was all aboard the minibuses and back to Shurdington where we arrived bang on time. A big thank-you to the leaders who helped with the weekend: Paddy & Chris Langham, Paul & David Huntley, Steve & Lucy Crick, Steve Carpenter, Jean Buxton, Phil Hallett, Lesley Herbert, Sos Smith and Ashley Martin.
