PADI Open Water 2012
Scouts must be able to swim 50 metres in light clothes and keep afloat for 5 minutes for this course
4 – 6 and 18 – 20 May 2012
The PADI open water qualification is a lifetime award, internationally recognised, allowing holders to hire equipment whilst on holiday and scuba-dive in all the interesting exotic places on the planet. For Scouts, obtaining this qualification also leads to the award of water sports activity plus badge and can count towards Chief Scouts Award challenges. Explorer scouts fulfil the physical recreation element of the Chief Scouts Award (Platinum or Diamond) and it can also be used for elements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
There are two pre-requisites to join our courses:
- All participants must have successfully completed a try-dive - for those who have not done this through the county scout try-dive sessions, evidence will be required.
- Participants should ideally be at least 12 years of age, although if spaces are available younger participants can be taken at the discretion of the (scout) leadership and (scuba) instruction teams.
To gain the award, participants will attend 2 residential scout weekends based at a local scout meeting place involving theory (including examinations), practical pool sessions and open water skills training (including assessments).
The scuba element of the course has been discounted by JCScuba for enrolling through the scouts. The fee includes training manual, log book and full PADI certification as well as transport, food, accommodation and any scouting element of the residential weekends.
£375 - Can be paid in installments

Survival Skills
2 - 4 June 2012
We will be ‘surviving’ in an area of outstanding beauty again this year.
- Survival skills (novices) The original basic course leading to the scout activity badge. An action packed weekend including cooking over open fires without pots and pans; building and sleeping in a bivouac; learning all about surviving in the great outdoors. Not for the youngest scouts however as it is quite a demanding weekend.
- Bushcraft and survival (more experienced) For those who have already done a basic survival course.
- Advanced survival This is an "advanced" survival course. Reduced resources and more initiative lead scouts towards the Nomad course. Participants will work with minimal equipment and will have the chance to practice previously learnt skills and gain new ones.
- Nomads This is a really advanced course on which you ‘survive’ with just the basics. It is only open to those who have already completed B&S or advanced survival and is by invitation only.
