Open to Explorers, Scout Network, Leaders. Minimum age 16.
Are you 16 or over, and interested in developing the skills required to assist in the instruction of climbing activities? This course covers the Mountain Training (the National Governing Body for climbing instructors) Indoor Climbing Assistant qualification. Assessment of knowledge and skills will be carried out throughout the course, resulting in either a “Pass” or “Defer” (which means you’ll need to carry out some additional assessment at a later date having gained more training or experience).
To attend you must:
- Be 16 or over.
- Be competent in the basic skills of belaying, harness fitting and tying on. If you are on the NICAS scheme then you should be working towards level 3 or higher.
- Register for the scheme with Mountain Training (registration costs an additional £20).
- Log 5 indoor or outdoor climbing sessions (half-day or evening) in DLOG, Mountain Training’s digital logbook. There is no personal climbing requirement, but you must have belayed at these sessions.
Full details of the award can be found at:
The course itself will be a full day at The Warehouse Climbing Centre in Gloucester, and will cost £50 (covering entry to the wall, the external instructor, etc). The Mountain Training registration fee of £20 is in addition, and is required in order to attend. The course will be taught by an external Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, assisted by the county climbing team.
